Whether you are at a dinner party, out at a bar or shamelessly home alone on a Friday night, chances are we are not settling for that one wine we promised ourselves earlier.
I present to you my tested and verified, go to, Natural Hangover Remedies for those unexpected and indulgent nights:
Hydration is key – ideally we should be aiming to have one glass of water in between each wine. This is not always achievable, so I always endeavor to have at least 500 mL of water when I get home before getting into bed. If you find you completely bypass the water rule, first thing in the morning you need to rehydrate your body and clean out the toxins. The day after a big night out I will drink at least 3 L of water.
Detoxify the liver – alcohol is metabolised in the liver. Our livers work hard to detoxify all the impurities and waste from our everyday lives, so adding that extra toxic load to the pile can make it build up and slow down. Lemon is one of the most powerful natural detoxifiers; it helps the liver process the waste and eliminates it out of our bodies at a faster rate. Try drinking warm lemon water first thing upon rising to give your body the ultimate detoxification and rehydration.
Restore the lost nutrients – alcohol makes you need to go to the toilet. A lot. Not only are we now getting dehydrated, we too are expelling vital nutrients and electrolytes that keep us going. My must have for the day after is coconut water. Packed full of electrolytes and potassium, coconut water works wonders on making you feel alive and functioning again.
Fructose, Fructose, Fructose
Fructose – when I wake up after a few too many the night before, my body craves fruit! This is simply because alcohol depletes our storage of glucose, making us feel weak and fatigued. Fruit salad or fresh juice is the ideal breakfast the morning after and will make you thrive by lunch.
